Electric mini tractor for small acreage and hobby farms
The short answer
An electric mini tractor is a compact four-wheel-drive tractor that runs on a battery. On small acreage, such as a horse paddock at home, a hobby farm, an orchard or a large yard, it is a quiet and clean way to harrow, mow, clear manure and load.
You charge it overnight from an ordinary 230V socket, there is no diesel to store on site and you can barely hear it. Knegt builds three electric models; for small plots the 304G2E (45 hp) is usually the logical starting point.
What do we mean by a mini tractor?
Mini tractor, small tractor and compact tractor are used interchangeably. They all mean a tractor that is much smaller and lighter than a farm tractor but still has real tractor functions: four-wheel drive, a three-point linkage for implements, a PTO and hydraulics for a front loader, for example.
That is the difference with a ride-on mower or garden tractor. Those are built to cut grass, not to pull a field harrow, drive a rotary harrow or lift a bale clamp. If you do more than mow on a small plot, you will quickly need a mini tractor.
Since 2006, Knegt has developed and built compact tractors in its own workshop in Veldhoven, the Netherlands, for both professional and private use.
What can you do with it on a small plot?
On a few hectares, or even less, a lot of different work comes together. With one mini tractor and a few implements from the Knegt range you can cover most of it:
- Horse paddock at home: spread manure with a field harrow, top the pasture with a pasture topper and level the paddock or arena with a ground leveller.
- Hobby farm with animals: clear stables with a manure scraper, move straw and feed with a front loader and handle bales with a bale clamp.
- Vegetable garden or small field: loosen the soil and prepare a seedbed with a rotary harrow or rotary tiller, and spread fertiliser with a fertiliser spreader.
- Orchard, hedgerow or estate: mulch verges and rough growth with a flail mower, process prunings with a wood chipper and set posts with a post hole digger.
- Yard and paths: move pallets and bags with a pallet fork on the front loader.
Which implements suit which model depends on power, lift capacity and PTO. If in doubt, have Knegt or a dealer check it for you.
Why electric suits a small plot
On a small plot you often work close to home, to animals and to neighbours. That is exactly where the strengths of an electric tractor show.
- Quiet: you can work early in the morning or in the evening without engine noise bothering neighbours or animals.
- No exhaust fumes: you can drive straight into the stable, barn or shed.
- Charging at home: a full charge from an ordinary 230V socket takes 8 to 10 hours, ideal overnight. A fast charger takes the battery from 30 to 80 percent in about 2.5 hours.
- No diesel on site: no fuel to store and no refuelling.
- Simple maintenance: Knegt recommends a service every 350 hours or once a year.
On a small plot a tractor rarely runs all day. Run time per charge depends on the workload and the battery you choose, and opportunity charging in between is possible.
How to choose the right mini tractor in 5 steps
Don't start with the model, start with your own plot and jobs. These five steps will help:
- Step 1, list your jobs: what do you do every week, what a few times a year, and which job is the heaviest?
- Step 2, look at your space: how wide are gates, stable doors and paths, and where will the tractor be parked and charged?
- Step 3, choose the model: the 304G2E (30 hp drive motor + 15 hp hydraulics) is the most compact choice. For heavier pulling or groundwork, also look at the 404G2E (55 hp) or the 504G3E (65 hp).
- Step 4, choose the battery: you can choose between 24 kWh and 34 kWh. If you work longer days, the larger battery or an extra battery pack gives you more headroom.
- Step 5, choose implements and options: think of a front loader, turf tyres to protect the grass or a cab for winter work.
All electric Knegt tractors have four-wheel drive and power steering, are CE approved and road legal in Europe. You get a 2-year factory warranty, with optional extended warranty packages.
Frequently asked questions
Is an electric mini tractor suitable for private owners?
Yes. Knegt supplies compact tractors for professional and private use. Keep in mind that it is a full tractor, not a ride-on mower: it is built for pulling, lifting and groundwork.
Can I charge an electric mini tractor at home?
Yes. An ordinary 230V socket is enough; a full charge then takes 8 to 10 hours. If you want to charge faster, you can use a fast charger.
Which Knegt model suits a small plot?
For most small plots the 304G2E is the starting point, as it is the most compact. The 404G2E and 504G3E are available for heavier work.
How much does an electric mini tractor cost?
That depends on the model, the battery, the implements and options such as a cab and front loader. Build your own configuration in the configurator or request a quote. Financing is available through De Lage Landen (DLL).
Try a mini tractor on your own land
The best way to find out how quiet and manoeuvrable an electric mini tractor is, is on your own land.
