Charging an electric tractor: wall socket or fast charger?
The short answer
You charge a Knegt electric compact tractor from a standard 230V wall socket or with the optional fast charger. On a wall socket, a full charge takes 8 to 10 hours, which makes it ideal for overnight charging. With the fast charger, the battery goes from 30 to 80 percent in about 2.5 hours, for example during a break.
Top-up charging is always possible, and for long days there is an optional extra battery pack. So you do not need a dedicated charging station to get started.
Three ways to keep your tractor powered
The electric Knegt models, the 304G2E, 404G2E and 504G3E, run on a lithium battery. When you buy, you choose between a 24 kWh and a 34 kWh battery. There are three charging options, and you can combine them:
- Charging from a wall socket: you plug the tractor into a normal 230V socket. This is the simplest option and suits operations that use the tractor during the day and charge it overnight.
- Charging with the fast charger: the fast charger is available as an option. It takes the battery from 30 to 80 percent in about 2.5 hours. Useful if you want to top up over lunch or between two jobs.
- Extra battery pack: an optional extra battery pack extends your working time. This is especially interesting if you work long days with few breaks to recharge.
The best combination depends on how many hours you work per day, how heavy the work is and how much time there is between work blocks.
How long does charging take? A comparison
Charging time varies a lot by method. This is how they compare:
- 230V wall socket: a full charge takes 8 to 10 hours. You need no extra equipment and can charge almost anywhere with a socket.
- Fast charger: from 30 to 80 percent in about 2.5 hours. With lithium batteries the last part of the charge is usually slower, which is why the fast charging time is quoted up to 80 percent.
- Extra battery pack: this is not a charging method but extra capacity. You keep working longer before you need to charge.
How long a full battery lasts depends on the model, the battery choice and the intensity of the work. Light work such as transport or sweeping uses less power than heavy pushing with the front loader or an implement that runs on the hydraulics all the time. An electric tractor also uses no energy when it is standing still, unlike a diesel engine that keeps idling.
How to get through a full working day: a 4-step charging plan
A simple charging plan helps you get the most out of your battery. Go through these steps:
- Look at your working day: how many hours do you use the tractor on average, and which jobs demand a lot of power? Also note when the tractor stands still anyway, such as during breaks or meetings.
- Charge overnight from the wall socket: start every day with a full battery. With 8 to 10 hours of charging time on 230V, this fits well into the night.
- Use breaks to top up: top-up charging is always possible. With the fast charger, a break of a few hours adds a good amount of charge, so you can keep going in the second half of the day.
- Add extra capacity if you need it: if you work long days without breaks, an extra battery pack or the larger 34 kWh battery is worth considering.

Where to charge and how to keep the battery healthy
Charging does not require a fuel tank or special storage, but it does call for a fixed, practical charging spot. Keep the following in mind:
- Choose a dry, covered place, for example the barn, stable or shed where the tractor is parked anyway.
- Make sure there is an easily accessible socket or a connection for the fast charger, so you do not have to rely on long extension cables.
- If you have solar panels, you can charge the tractor during the day with your own solar power.
- If you want to use the fast charger or an existing charging point, ask Knegt or your dealer which connection is required.
The lithium battery is rated for 3,500 charge cycles. Top-up charging is no problem; you do not need to run the battery completely flat first. For everything else, follow the instructions in the manual and have the tractor serviced every 350 operating hours or at least once a year. Knegt offers a 2-year factory warranty, with the option of extended warranty packages.
Frequently asked questions
Can I simply charge an electric tractor at home or in the yard?
Yes. A standard 230V socket is enough. A full charge then takes 8 to 10 hours.
Do I need a charging station for an electric tractor?
No, not to get started. If you want to charge faster, there is an optional fast charger that takes the battery from 30 to 80 percent in about 2.5 hours.
Can I top up the battery before it is empty?
Yes, top-up charging is always possible, for example during the lunch break.
Which batteries are available?
Knegt offers a 24 kWh and a 34 kWh battery. An extra battery pack is also available as an option so you can work longer.
