Pallet forks for your tractor: uses and buying tips
The short answer
Pallet forks are a front loader attachment with two tines that let you pick up and move pallets and other heavy loads. On a compact tractor with a front loader you work almost as you would with a forklift, but also on gravel, grass and unpaved yards.
Knegt supplies the STOLL pallet fork for the STOLL front loader, which is available as an option on the electric Knegt models. For the diesel models, ask your dealer about the options. Choose your pallet forks based on the weight of your heaviest pallet, the lifting capacity of your front loader and the type of mounting, and have your dealer check the combination.
What are pallet forks and what are they used for?
Pallet forks consist of a frame that attaches to the front loader, with two tines mounted on it. You slide the tines under a pallet, tilt the fork back slightly and lift the load with the front loader hydraulics. That way you move heavy goods without lifting or carrying by hand.
Typical uses include:
- moving bags of feed, fertiliser or bedding from the lorry to storage
- moving building materials such as bricks, tiles and bags of sand on a building site or yard
- moving plants, potting soil and containers in nurseries and greenhouses
- moving big bags, crates and tools around municipal sites, parks and sports facilities
Pallet forks are one of Knegt's front loader attachments. For other jobs there are specialised attachments, such as the STOLL bale spear for round and square bales, the STOLL manure grab for manure and loose material, and the STOLL pelican bucket for bulk material like soil, sand or snow. If you handle a lot of pallets, pallet forks are the logical choice. Your dealer can advise which attachments fit your front loader.
How to choose the right pallet forks in 5 steps
- Determine your heaviest load: look at the weight you move most often and the maximum you want to lift. That determines which front loader and pallet forks you need.
- Check the lifting capacity of the front loader: it is the loader and the tractor, not the fork, that determine how much you can lift safely. Ask your dealer for the lifting capacity of the STOLL front loader on your model.
- Look at the mounting: the pallet forks must fit the coupling of your front loader. If you have attachments with a different mounting, a Skid-to-Euro adapter plate lets you combine attachments for Skid-steer or Euro mounting systems.
- Consider the pallets you use: match the tine length and the spacing between the tines to your pallets, so the load sits stable and evenly on the fork.
- Think about your terrain: on unpaved or sloping ground the tractor's four-wheel drive helps, but drive extra carefully there and keep the load low.
If you are unsure about any of these points, your Knegt dealer will work out the combination of tractor, front loader and pallet forks for you.
Working safely with pallet forks
Pallet forks make heavy work lighter, but a full pallet on the front loader shifts the tractor's centre of gravity. Follow these rules of thumb to work safely:
- Slide the tines as far under the pallet as possible, so the load rests against the fork frame.
- Tilt the fork back slightly before lifting, so the load cannot slide off the tines.
- Drive with the load as low as possible and only lift it high where you set the pallet down.
- Drive calmly, especially in bends, on slopes and on uneven ground.
- Never exceed the specified lifting capacity of the front loader and follow the front loader manual.
- Discuss with your dealer whether rear ballast is needed for your heaviest loads.
- Make sure nobody stands under or directly next to a raised load.
Knegt tractors have power steering and four-wheel drive, which makes manoeuvring with a load easier. Calm, predictable driving remains the basis.
Pallet forks on an electric tractor: work indoors too
On an electric Knegt the front loader runs on a separate 15 hp hydraulic motor. The 304G2E, 404G2E and 504G3E have separate motors for driving and hydraulics, so hydraulic power stays available for the front loader, even while you drive.
Because an electric compact tractor is quiet and produces no exhaust fumes, you can also use the pallet forks indoors: in barns, greenhouses, stables and warehouses. That makes an electric compact tractor with pallet forks an interesting option for businesses that move pallets both inside and outside. Prefer diesel? Ask your dealer about the front loader options for the 304G2, 404GT and 504GT.
Frequently asked questions
Do pallet forks fit every front loader?
No, the pallet forks must fit the mounting of the front loader. Knegt supplies the STOLL pallet fork for the STOLL front loader. With a Skid-to-Euro adapter plate you can use attachments with a different mounting.
How much can I lift with pallet forks?
That is determined by the front loader and the tractor, not the fork. Ask your Knegt dealer for the lifting capacity of the front loader on your model and always stay below it.
Can I also move bales with pallet forks?
For hay and straw bales the STOLL bale spear is more suitable, because its tines spear the bale. Pallet forks are intended for loads on pallets.
Can I work indoors with an electric tractor and pallet forks?
Yes. An electric Knegt produces no exhaust fumes and is quiet, so you can also work in halls, greenhouses and stables.
